Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan

There was once a twelve year old boy, who you could say reeked at everything. He gets kicked out at each school he gets in to. He had the worst stepdad in the world. Smelly Gabe Ugliano. He always played poker with his friends at home, and was nothing but trouble. His real dad died, the boy's sweet mom, Sally Jackson would say. But there was something special about this boy. Don't take him for granted.

Because he's a half blood. In other words, he's half human. And half god.

     Meet Percy Jackson.

After a long school year at Yancy Academy, Percy and his mom go to a beach called Montauk. But, who would have known that a few minutes inside a cabin of that beach was one, or should I say, the only friend of Percy's at school, Grover. He suddenly knocked on the door, but Percy discovers Grover being a satyr! Then they find theirselves inside the car running away from a monster, with Percy's mom knowing all along that Grover is protecting Percy.

The monster ends up taking Sally, and Percy gets a horn of the monster and gets Grover to safety inside a farmhouse his mother had told him about.

The next morning, Percy wakes up on a bed being fed pudding by a girl sitting next to him. And with that, I'd like to welcome you to Camp Half Blood. A summer camp for all the children of the gods. Kids all around are wearing "Camp Half Blood" shirts and are canoeing, running, swimming, and shooting bows-and-arrows.

After recovering, Percy also finds his favorite teacher at Yancy Academy, Mr. Brunner is actually named Chiron at camp! Some other things that happened in camp were; He finds out that he's a half blood since normal humans won't be able to see the camp. Percy was put into Cabin Eleven aka Hermes' cabin since they weren't sure of who his god parent was. He immediately meets a bully named Clarisse, daughter of Ares who almost drowns him in toilet water, but instead water shoots Clarisse and her friends and finds himself as the only one dry. He meets Luke, part of Ares' cabin, who trains him in sword fighting. The girl feeding him pudding on his first day at camp was Annabeth, the daughter of Athena. He discovers himself son of Poseidon, which means his dad is still alive. And, he, Grover, and Annabeth are granted a quest to visit the underworld to save Percy's mom and because of accusations that Percy has stolen Zeus' lightning bolt, so now, they think that Hades has stolen it.

With Zeus as the lord of the sky, it seems impossible for the three to reach the underworld before the summer solstice. They meet obstacles ahead too. Aunty Em's restaurant, where they find out that Aunty Em actually stands for Aunty M, meaning Medusa. The Lotus Casino, where they become trapped for days which becomes a deduction of days. They meet Ares, the god of war. Annabeth and Percy ride the tunnel of love to retrieve something for Ares. They get to a water bed store where the entrance they finally arrive to the underworld. But, what if Hades didn't stel the bolt? What if they wouldn't save Percy's mom? And better yet, would they even survive?

I should say that this story is very much like Harry Potter. Three friends of two boys and one girl on a deathly adventure. A place for their kind. A male protagonist who thought he was nothing. But, I had to wait until I was eleven to read it because I hated it back then. I think that the fun of being a twelve year old was iust left out too much. On the bright side, the story isn't so bad either. It makes kids know all about the different Gods and Godesses, with a twist, and still have the adventure present. Good job!
